Description

Galaxy Busters Elite is a game that myself and a team of other students created during the Spring 2021 semester for our Game Production Lab class. The class is intended to be a simulation of the game development industry wherein students will spend their time developing game concepts through multiple iterations and milestones, culminating in a professional-level release.

My team this semester consisted of 40 students total, all of us being grouped into different teams based on our skillsets and working together with one another to plan and develop a finished product. The game we made was a 3D rail-shooter/shoot 'em-up inspired by the likes of Star Fox. I was placed on the programming team and was tasked with developing the aiming system, the behaviors for each of the 3 unique player weapons and their projectiles, the weapon overload system, the scoring/combo system, and the level challenges system. The player earns score for destroying enemies, executing skillful maneuvers, and completing challenges.

The project was not without its fair share of problems but I think the team did a great job navigating issues as they came up. I had a ton of fun working on this team and made so many wonderful new connections. As time has passed, I've grown more satisfied with the final product and I've loosened up on my desire to reach perfection in every aspect of the game. For a game made by a bunch of students who were all new to game development and having to worry about all their other classes, I think we did a great job. I've learned so much from this experience, both in terms of how to better work on a team of developers and in terms of good programming practices for large projects. I'm looking forward to my next projects, hopefully with some of the same people I met here.
